There is a parking area at the bottom of the hill and you’ll go through the gate and wind up the hill overlooking the reservoir to the visitor’s center.

Rim Trail (Uncompaghre Plateau; Montrose); 5 – 6.5 miles RT, Easy.  This relatively flat trail travels thru aspens past large rock cairn on L.  Detour to cairn for wide-ranging views including Utah’s La Sal mtns which can best be viewed a short distance to R of cairn. Return to cars backtracking along same route or continue up trail to R fork and take this section of trail to road (requires a shuttle).   Directions: Take Dave Woods Rd to Divide Rd (20.8 miles), turn R and continue 1.6 miles to Rim Rd/Rim Trail TH signage on L.  Pull into parking area on R across from TH.

Travel west on Highway 90 for approximately 3.4 miles to the intersection with 6250 Road, Dave Wood Road. Turn south onto 6250 Road and continue for approximately 11.3 miles to the Simms Mesa/Dave Wood Trailhead at the National Forest Boundary.

Follow Hwy 50 N to turnoff for Escalante Canyon; turn L.  Travel to second dirt road on R, turn R to fork in road.  Follow R fork (hike can also be accessed from L fork) and travel to “parking area”.  Hike cross country to pick up trail.

This canyon trail has uphill at beginning & end interspersed with relatively flat sections.  Wonderful view from overlook/ridge at end of trail.  Directions:  Hwy 50 N to Escalante Rd.  Turn L and follow road 2 miles past Gunnison River bridge to TH on R.  Parking is opposite a ranch house driveway.
