Hiking in southwestern Colorado provides unique challenges. First, it is a vast area and offers a diversity of terrain. Many of the hikes will require steep climbs and significant elevation gain. Altitudes of over 10,000 feet are common and can present problems for hikers not accustomed to it or have difficulty acclimating.
Many of the hikes are in wilderness areas where route finding could become an issue. A compass, GPS, maps and the ability to use these tools are essential. In some instances, getting to the trail head will be on rough roads requiring high clearance and/or four wheel drive vehicles.
Our hiking tips regarding clothing and appropriate hiking gear will be helpful. We will suggest the best times or seasons for hiking in southwestern Colorado. We hike year round and will provide input on when and where to hike.
